More Than Another Fourth of July

Fireworks. Barbecues. Flags. Time spent with family and friends. For many Americans, these are the traditions that define the Fourth of July.

But this year is different. On July 4, 2026, the United States celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone known as the Semiquincentennial (try saying that after your Fourth of July party!)

On that day in 1776, representatives from 13 American colonies formally declared their independence from Great Britain, setting in motion the creation of a new nation founded on the principles of self-government, liberty and opportunity. While the road ahead was far from certain, the Declaration became one of the defining documents in American history and laid the foundation for the country we know today.

Over the past 250 years, generations of people have contributed to the American story through service, innovation, perseverance and community spirit. This anniversary offers an opportunity not only to celebrate the nation's history, but also to reflect on the people, communities and shared values that continue to shape its future, including right here in North Port.

And while 250 years may seem like a long time, communities like North Port are part of the continuing American story.

A Nation's Growth, A Community's Journey

Over the past 250 years, the United States has grown from a nation of approximately 2.5 million people in 13 colonies to more than 340 million people across 50 states. What began as a bold experiment in self-government has evolved into one of the most diverse and dynamic countries in the world.

While North Port's story spans just a fraction of that time, its growth has been remarkable in its own right. When the community that would become North Port was first envisioned in the late 1950s, there were no neighborhoods, schools, parks or City Hall, just a vision for the future. Today, less than 70 years later, North Port is home to nearly 100,000 residents and is recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Those numbers tell an incredible story.

In 1776, America stretched along a narrow section of the Atlantic coast. Today, it spans an entire continent. In 1959, North Port existed only on planning maps. Today, it is a thriving community with businesses, schools, public safety services, parks, sports facilities and a growing economy. Both stories are reminders that communities are built over time through the contributions of countless individuals, families and generations working toward a shared future.

Just as America's story continues to evolve 250 years after independence, North Port's story is still being written every day by the people who choose to call it home.

The individuals who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 could never have imagined the America of 2026. They could not have envisioned airplanes crossing the country in hours, people carrying powerful computers in their pockets, or communities like North Port flourishing in Southwest Florida. Yet every generation has played a role in shaping the nation we know today.

The same is true for the future. None of us can know what America will look like in 2276, when future generations gather to celebrate the nation's 500th anniversary. The decisions we make today, the communities we build, the values we uphold and the opportunities we create will all help shape the America they inherit.

As we celebrate this historic milestone, we are reminded that history is not only something we look back on. It is something we create every day. Through acts of service, community involvement, innovation, stewardship and simply being good neighbors, each of us contributes to the next chapter of the American story.
