Protect your home and build to code

Mitigation increases occupant health and safety during a disaster, protects the local tax base, ensures continuity of essential services, and supports more rapid recovery from disasters.

Installation of shutters, generators and other hurricane season preparations you may choose to make often involve consulting first with the North Port Building Division. Many installations require issuance of permits and inspection of the work by our Building Inspectors. Please don’t hesitate to call us at (941) 429-7044 if you have any questions.

If you are thinking of hiring someone to perform work at your home, be certain they are registered with the City of North Port Building Division. Anyone who does electrical, plumbing, mechanical or structural work must be licensed by the State and registered in the City of North Port.

The Building Division also requires every contractor to have general liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. Please visit our Business Tax Registrations page or call (941) 429-7188 to learn if the contractor you selected is licensed in North Port.

The links on this page will lead you to more specific information you may need to know when making preparations for the hurricane season.

Post-Storm Recovery and Permitting

After a major storm, many residents and businesses need to make urgent repairs. To support a safe and timely recovery, the City has developed a Hurricane and Tropical Storm Recovery Permitting Guide.

This guide explains:

  • Which common repairs can be made without a permit
  • Which permits are exempt from fees following a declared emergency
  • Which projects still require permits and fees
  • Local requirements for rebuilding after substantial damage or improvements

The guide will also be updated with storm-specific exemptions, waivers and deadlines as soon as practicable following the issuance of a state of emergency.
