As of Oct. 1, 2023, Solid Waste has implemented collection route changes to better prepare for future growth. With more than 10,000 homes affected by this change, please visit the interactive route change map to search your address and find out if your collection day was changed.

If you use the Recycle Coach smartphone app, the database has been updated with the new collection days. However, you will need to re-enter your address in the app in order to receive the new collection days. You can re-enter your address by following the steps below:

* Click "My Places"
* Click "Home"
* Click "Location"
* Re-enter your address

Who We Are

The Solid Waste Division is part of the Public Works Department for the City of North Port and is the working entity which provides service to you. The Solid Waste District is the taxing authority for solid waste services. The primary revenue source for the District is a non-ad valorem assessment. For all residential real property that have a certificate of occupancy, the current assessment is $275 per fiscal year.

What We Do

The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the collection of garbage, recyclable material, yard waste and bulk items (furniture, etc.) within the City limits of North Port. Residential garbage, recycling and yard waste are picked up once a week. Bulk collection service is available on a pre-scheduled basis only. Each residence is allowed two free bulk collections per year, each limited to 5 cubic yards. Additional paid collections may also be scheduled. Commercial garbage and recycling collection services are offered from one to five times per week.

Appliances and Bulk Metal

To schedule a bulk metal or appliance pickup, please read the guidelines on our Appliance and Bulk Metal page and then fill out the online form or call Public Works Customer Service at 941-240-8050.

Bulk Waste

Each residence is offered two free bulk pick ups per fiscal year (Oct 1-Sept 30), with a limit of 5 cubic yards (about 5’ x 5’ x 5’) each, or one free bulk pick up of up to 10 cubic yards. Additional pick ups are available for a fee of $16.50 per cubic yard, plus a fixed $16.50 admin fee. Please view additional information on our Bulk Waste page.

Debris Collection Right-of-Entry Form for Private Roadways and Subdivisions

Under its Public Assistance Program, FEMA may reimburse for debris removal on privately maintained roads if the legal owner or their designee completes a Right-of-Entry Authorization (ROE) Before the City of North Port or its contractors can remove debris from your roadways, the completed forms must be submitted to the Department of Public Works . Please note - the submission of a completed ROE does not guarantee that the City or its contractors will provide that service. The City reserves the right evaluate the debris removal need and applicable FEMA guidelines.

Download and complete the Right of Entry form(PDF, 246KB) and return it to the Department of Public Works, 1100 N. Chamberlain Blvd., North Port, FL 34286. The form can also be scanned and returned via email.

Electronic Waste

Electronic items are referred to as E-Waste and can be recycled. Please do not place them in your automated garbage container. To dispose of electronic waste, please call Public Works Customer Service at 941-240-8050 to schedule a pickup.

The following E-Waste can be recycled:

  • Computer towers
  • Laptops and tablets

*Televisions, printers and computer monitors are considered garbage. If you cannot fit them in your normal garbage tote, please schedule a bulk pick up by calling Customer Service at (941) 240-8050.

Garbage

Garbage is collected once per week. All garbage must be placed in a City issued garbage tote. Bag loose garbage before placing it in your garbage tote. Find additional information on our Garbage Guidelines page.

Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous wastes and chemicals cannot be placed in the garbage or recycling. Hazardous waste can lead to toxic fumes, fires, collection delays and injuries to our Solid Waste staff. Learn how to handle these items on our Hazardous Waste page.

Holiday Collection Schedule

North Port Solid Waste does not provide collection service on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

When these holidays fall during the week, collection will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week. Solid Waste collects on all other holidays.

Recycling

Recycling is mandatory in the City of North Port. Our Recycling Program provides two recycling totes, one for paper products and one for commingled glass, plastic, and cans. Collection between the two totes will rotate each week. Find additional information on our Recycling page.

Unwanted Medications & Medical Sharps

Unwanted Medication

Expired or unwanted prescriptions should never be flushed down the toilet or a drain. Residents can drop off expired/unwanted medication in the disposal box at the North Port Police Department. Never place expired or unwanted medication in your garbage or recycling totes. Call 941-429-7300 for more information.

Medical Sharps

Never place hypodermic needles in garbage or recycling containers. The City of North Port Fire Department offers a medical sharps exchange program at no cost. Call 941-240-8150 for more information.

NOTE: This service is not currently offered at the shared facility in Wellen Park, however it will be as soon as the new fire station in this area has opened.

Walk-Up Service

Solid Waste offers a special collection service for persons with physical disabilities who cannot get their containers to the street.

Yard Waste

Residents receive once-a-week yard waste collection service for any amount of properly prepared material. Yard waste is collected the same day as garbage and recycling. Find acceptable materials and additional information on our Yard Waste page.
