Did you receive a Mandatory Utilities Connection Letter?

UPDATE: The City Commission paused the mandatory water connection that impacted about 450 property owners in North Port at Tuesday’s City Commission Meeting. After hearing from the community, the Commission directed staff to take the following actions:

  • Notify all residents who recently received a letter about the project that it is paused
  • Work on a change in the City Code to make this service connection voluntary
  • For those who want to opt in voluntarily within 365 days, the cost will be capped at an amount to be determined and approved by the Commission
  • Eliminate the $10 service fee
  • Require a mandatory connection to City water for new construction (when building in a location where service is available)

If you have already started the process, you do not need to take any further action. Progress on all properties associated with this letter is paused until further direction is received.

NOTE: The project that has been discussed is NOT related to the long-term expansion of wastewater (sewer) service. You can learn more about that project at NorthPortFL.gov/WastewaterExpansion.

FAQ

Who is required to connect to City water?

According to Chapter 78-60(a) of the North Port City Code, all properties with access to central potable (drinking) water are required to connect to the system within 365 days of receiving notice.

The Florida Building Code (Plumbing, Section P2602.1) also requires buildings to connect to a public water supply if one is available.

Why is connection to City water required?

City water is professionally treated, tested and maintained to meet strict state and federal standards. Connecting ensures all residents have safe, reliable and consistent water service while protecting our shared groundwater resources.

What are the benefits of connecting to public water?

  • Reliability and safety
    • Water is tested regularly for quality and safety
    • Professionally maintained systems mean no more well repairs or pump maintenance
    • Stable pressure and dependable service year-round
    • Treated to remove bacteria, metals and chemicals
  • Financial and property value advantages
    • Homes connected to municipal water often have higher resale value
    • One predictable monthly bill replaces unpredictable repair costs
    • Improved fire protection can help lower homeowners’ insurance rates
  • Community and environmental benefits
    • Fire hydrants provide high-volume water for emergency response
    • Reduces risk of groundwater contamination
    • Supports coordinated public health and emergency communication efforts

What does it cost to connect?

The current cost (as of November 2025) to connect a single-family home to the City’s potable water system is $12,300.06, which includes:

  • Capacity fee: $2,610.00
  • Water line extension fee: $7,835.06
  • Meter installation fee: $1,855.00

What work is required on my property?

Homeowners are responsible for the water line connection from the meter to the house. You’ll need to:

  1. Hire a licensed plumber to connect your home’s plumbing to the meter.
  2. Have a certified backflow installer install and test a backflow preventer to protect the public water system.

Can I keep my well after I connect?

Yes, you may keep your well and use it for irrigation – not potable (drinking) water.

What if I recently upgraded my system?

To reduce the cost burden for those property owners who recently purchased and installed a new or replacement well, a discount is available. The property owner must provide proof of purchase and installation within five years of the date City water service became available to their property.

Please note - The incentive credit applies only to the $,7,825.06 water line extension fee.

The incentive credit will be based on the number of days between the installation or replacement of the well and the date of service availability, according to the following schedule:
