City, County prep for possible Myakka River flooding

Sarasota County Government and the City of North Port are coordinating to provide sandbags and shelter to residents who may be impacted by expected flooding near the Myakka River in the coming days.

 

Based on information and guidance from the US National Weather Service Tampa Bay Florida, parts of the Myakka River will experience elevated flood levels between Thursday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 10. Individuals should take precautions now to protect their families and property.

NWS has issued a Flood Warning for areas mentioned below until the Myakka River recedes. Areas immediately surrounding the river, especially low-lying areas, may experience up to two feet of flooding between Thursday and Saturday.

 

North of Clark Road on Thursday, Aug. 8,

Near I-75 during the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 9,

US-41 during the early morning of Saturday, Aug. 10.

A temporary evacuation center is available to any citizen who is relocating from at-risk-areas along the Myakka River to the following location:

Woodmere Park, 3951 Woodmere Park Blvd., Venice.

Those who are impacted and relocating to an evacuation center are asked to come prepared with what they need. A disaster supply checklist and emergency preparedness guide can be found at scgov.net/beprepared.

Self-service sandbags distribution points will be open at the two following locations. Bags and sand will be provided. Individuals are asked to bring their own shovels.
