The North Port City Commission has selected Michael Fuino to serve as the City Attorney following a nationwide search.

The Commission approved an employment agreement with Fuino on Tuesday evening. He will begin serving in the position Oct. 15.

"We have been impressed with Michael's abilities as a litigator and his knowledge of municipal law, as well as his capacity to work collaboratively within an organization and with outside partners," said Mayor Phil Stokes. "These skills will serve him and the City well as he takes on this important role representing North Port's interests and leading our legal team."

Fuino has served as a senior assistant attorney for the City of Clearwater since 2018. He is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law and is Florida Bar Certified in city, county and local government law.

"It is a distinct honor to have been selected as North Port’s successor City Attorney," Fuino said. "The candidate field was stellar, and I would expect no less from a city as tremendous as North Port.”

The City Attorney is one of three charter officials hired by the Commission, along with the City Manager and City Clerk. The position serves as the legal advisor for North Port's elected officials, staff and advisory boards and committees and oversees the City's in-house legal team.

Deputy City Attorney Michael Golen has served as the interim city attorney for the past year and will return to his position as deputy.
