Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous wastes and chemicals cannot be placed in the garbage or recycling. Hazardous waste can lead to toxic fumes, fires, collection delays and injuries to our Solid Waste staff. These kinds of accidents occur when a garbage truck compresses the garbage, causing collected materials to mix and react together. Please consider the safety of City workers and their equipment.

Hazardous items include:

  • Pool chemicals
  • Automotive products
  • Pesticides
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Paint Solvents
  • Cleaners
  • Adhesives & glues
  • Fertilizers
  • Household fire extinguishers
  • Propane cylinders (BBQ size)

The City does not provide weekly hazardous waste collection, however we do hold an annual collection event every March. In addition, residents can dispose of hazardous waste at theSarasota County Central County Landfilllocated at 4000 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis, FL.

The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the exception of New Year's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  For more information call Sarasota County at 941-861-5000.

Motor Oil

Solid Waste collects used motor oil curbside. To use this service, please place motor oil into an empty one-gallon, screw-top plastic jug and label it "USED MOTOR OIL". Place the container next to your recycling bin on your scheduled collection day.  If not collected by end of day, please call public works customer service at 941-240-8050.

Batteries

Automotive, marine and farm-grade batteries are recyclable and can be placed next to your recycling bin on your regular scheduled collection day.

Rechargeable batteries - Nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion) and small sealed lead (less than 2 lbs) - are recyclable. Put rechargeable batteries in a plastic bag and place on top of the paper recycling bin for collection.

Alkaline batteries are NOT hazardous and can be placed into the garbage (AA, AAA batteries, etc). All other batteries (lead acid, lithium, Lithium ion, lithium phosphate, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, etc) can be recycled thru either our collection facilities (250 S. Jackson Rd Venice would be closest) or local retailer such as Home Depot, Lowes or Batteries Plus. If batteries are rechargeable, then they are recyclable is a good rule to remember.

Fluorescent Lights

The Home Depot in North Port offers free in-store CFL recycling for households. You can take them to the “Return” area where a collection box is located. We recommend contacting them before making the trip.

Mercury lamps (compact fluorescent, fluorescent), can be recycled at the Sarasota County Hazardous Waste facilities. Most LED lamps can be placed in the garbage as well with the exception of red LED. They are high in lead and should be recycled. There are some Home Depot and Lowes stores that have a "used lamp drop-off" but it is during certain times of year. Please call customer service at your local retailer and ask before making the trip. The South Sarasota County Chemical Collection Center will also accept both of those items at no charge.

Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

Each year, the City of North Port partners with Sarasota County to host a hazardous waste collection event at City Hall.   The next Household Hazardous Waste collection event(PDF, 1MB) will be held this fall, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Campus, utilizing the entrance at 1850 W. This event will be held rain or or shine, with the exception of lightning. If the event must be canceled due to lightning or similar weather issues, Solid Waste will make every effort to reschedule at a later date.
