Parks & Rec invites community to explore and protect local nature
Published on January 08, 2026
The North Port Parks & Recreation Department is inviting residents of all ages to connect with the outdoors through a series of upcoming nature-based programs designed to educate, inspire and protect the city’s natural resources. From guided walks and habitat restoration to citizen science initiatives, these free programs offer meaningful ways for families and individuals to explore local ecosystems while giving back to the environment.
North Port Nature Walks offer guided hikes in partnership with the Neighborhood Land Conservancy. Participants will explore local trails, discover wildlife and learn about keystone species and their importance to the ecosystem. Each walk is followed by a volunteer opportunity to help remove invasive plant species from the park. Gloves and bags are provided. This free, family-friendly program is designed for all ages. The next walk is scheduled for Jan. 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Myakkahatchee Creek Greenway Trail and will begin at the Appomattox Drive side of the trail. Pre-registration is required to limit group size.
The Go Green with Parks program takes place Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at Marina Park, 7030 Chancellor Blvd. This interactive event will feature educational activities focused on the vital role of local brackish and saltwater habitats. Participants will learn how these ecosystems support biodiversity, protect water quality and contribute to healthier coastal communities. No registration is required.
During the month of March, residents are invited to take part in BioBlitz, a self-guided citizen science experience at the Myakkahatchee Creek Greenway Trail. Participants will use the iNaturalist app to document plants, insects and animals they observe while exploring the park at their own pace. These observations help create a snapshot of local biodiversity and contribute valuable data to support pollinator conservation. BioBlitz is part of a national initiative coordinated by the National Recreation and Park Association.
These programs reflect North Port Parks & Recreation’s ongoing commitment to environmental education, conservation and community involvement. For more information on these and other nature-based programs, visit NorthPortFL.gov/NaturePrograms.
