Boca Chica Groundbreaking

The City of North Port proudly celebrated the groundbreaking of Boca Chica Neighborhood Park on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. Community members, City leadership and project partners gathered at the 1600 block of Boca Chica Avenue, between Ponds Street and Oceanside Street, to commemorate the start of construction on the new passive neighborhood park. The ceremony featured remarks from City officials before the ceremonial turning of the shovels, officially launching a project that will bring nature-focused recreation to the surrounding neighborhood.

Boca Chica Neighborhood Park has been intentionally designed as a serene, environmentally sensitive space that preserves the natural character of the land. The plan includes open green areas, a nature themed playground, pervious walking paths, and protected gopher tortoise habitat, ensuring residents will have a peaceful place to stroll and enjoy the outdoors close to home. The project is being brought to life with support from DMK Associates for design and engineering and Halfacre Construction Company as the construction manager.

“This project reflects our commitment to providing high-quality neighborhood spaces where residents can connect with nature,” said Sandy Pfundheller, Director of Parks & Recreation. “Boca Chica Neighborhood Park will enrich community life while protecting the environmental features that make this area special.”

Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation Trish Sturgess added, “We’re excited to bring a serene, community-focused space to this neighborhood. This park has been part of the City’s long-term vision for several years, and we’re looking forward to seeing construction move forward.”

The project first entered the City’s Capital Improvement Program in 2017, underscoring its importance in meeting long-term recreational needs. Construction is expected to progress quickly, with the park anticipated to open to the public as early as February 2026.
