Process

Step 1: Get your ORI Number

This is the digital address the state uses to direct your results to the proper regulatory agency for review. Live Scan requires an ORI number – print cards do not. If you are unsure of what your ORI number is, your employer, licensing authority, or regulatory agency is able to provide you with the correct information. Due to the sheer volume of ORI numbers available and the fact that a submission cannot be edited after it’s been transmitted, the North Port Police Department is unable to provide guidance related to selecting the correct ORI number.

Step 2: Walk-In

Walk-ins are welcome any time during the fingerprinting hours of operation. Walk-ins will be served on a first-come first-served basis.

Step 3: Get Scanned

You will need at least one form of government issued identification, preferably a Florida driver’s license or identification card. You will also need your social security number and a form of payment. The entire process takes approximately 10-15 minutes. As long as your hands are clean with no visible dirt, it is not necessary to wash your hands before the appointment. Please refrain from using any hand sanitizer or lotions before your appointment as it may make it more difficult to get a good quality scan. Once completed, the scan will be submitted to FDLE for immediate processing and you’ll be emailed a receipt with the Transaction Control Number (TCN) and other pertinent information. Please do not delete this email as it contains important information you may need to reference at a later date.

Step 4: Complete Fingerprint Payment Process with FDLE

Once your fingerprints are submitted, you will be responsible to cover the processing fees set forth by FDLE and the FBI. You have 30 days to make payment by credit card at caps.fdle.state.fl.us or FDLE will remove the submitted prints from its system and you will have to start the fingerprinting process all over.

Step 5: Check Your Results

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement states that it can take up to 5 business days to completely process your results. You will not receive a copy of the results and you’ll need to inquire with your employer or regulatory agency as to the outcome of your background check. Please bear in mind that the North Port Police Department does not receive or review the results, and any inquiries regarding the scan or the results should be directed to the applicable state regulatory agency or the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at (850) 410-8161 using the supplied submission Transaction Control Number (TCN). You are able, however, to check the submission status of your scan at any time by simply going to the FDLE site and searching Civil Workflow Control System Transaction Status Search. Input your TCN number (included on your receipt from the North Port Police Department (starts with “70LX58A…”), you can see when the scan was submitted, the ORI number used, and the completion status.

Frequently Asked Questions

I received a letter stating my fingerprints were rejected due to low quality or illegibility. What should I do next?

You’ll need to come back to the North Port Police Department to be fingerprinted again. The FBI wants to see two attempts at getting legible prints to make sure “it’s you, not us”. Please bring the FDLE rejection letter with you as it will have information needed for the resubmission. If your prints fail again, the FDLE will resort to a manual query and do a national background search based on your name and social security number. Please bear in mind that a manual query takes much longer than a digital fingerprint search. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to improve the quality of your prints if they are already damaged from age or wear/tear. There is a no fee to be fingerprinted again.

Can you submit electronic prints to another state?

Unfortunately, the North Port Police Department does not offer an out-of-state submission service. The ability to transmit and successfully process electronic fingerprints to a government entity requires individualized contracts and very specific software requirements, which vary from state to state. However, your fingerprints can be captured on a FBI approved finger print card that can be mailed to the out of state agency.

What is an ORI number?

The ORI number is the digital address for where the fingerprint results need to be sent. Without the ORI number, it is impossible to submit fingerprints electronically for background screening.

What is an OCA number?

The OCA number is the numeric designation for the entities requesting prints (i.e. employers). The North Port Police Department is NOT a Clearinghouse Live Scan Service Provider for the following applicants:

  • Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA)
  • Department of Children and Families (DCF)
  • Department of Health (DOH)
  • Department of Elder Affairs
  • Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ)
  • Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD)
  • Vocational Rehabilitation

Where do I find the ORI and OCA numbers?

Your employer or regulatory agency will have this information. There are literally hundreds of ORI and OCA numbers, so the North Port Police Department cannot be responsible for selecting the correct one for you.

How long does it take to get the results?

Generally, it takes 24 to 72 hours from the time of receipt for the FDLE to route the results to your regulatory agency, and subsequently, to your employer.
