North Port Police Department Qualifications/Requirements for Employment

  • Sworn applicants, at the time of employment, must be a minimum of 21 years of age and meet the minimum requirements mandated by the State. FSS 943.13.
  • Sworn applicants must successfully pass the CJBAT. Exemptions: Currently certified LEO in FL or the United States
  • Civilian applicants, at the time of employment, must be a minimum of 18 years of age and meet the minimum requirements of the agency.
  • High school diploma or acceptable G.E.D.
  • Meet medical requirements
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Have valid Florida Driver License, at the time of hire
  • No conviction as an adult for any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury, false statement, moral turpitude, or domestic violence
  • No use of any illegal substance or medication, not prescribed to you by a licensed physician, within drug use guidelines:
    • Possessed or experimented with marijuana within the past two (2) years.
    • Used, tried, tasted, experimented with, or possessed any other illegal controlled substance classified as a Schedule I substance, or Schedule II substance as enumerated in Florida Statute 893.03.
    • Sold or delivered any illegal controlled substances at any time.
  • Cannot have a dishonorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States
  • Driver license cannot be suspended more than twice, for nonpayment of insurance
  • Driver license cannot be suspended or revoked, more than once, for traffic violations
  • Cannot have a conviction of, or pled to, “Fleeing or Attempting to Elude” a police officer as defined in F.S.S. 316.1935.
  • Cannot have a conviction, or pled to, “Driving Under the Influence,” as defined in F.S.S. 316.193
  • Cannot have accumulated more than twelve (12) points on their driver license during thirty-six (36) months before the date of application or have a driving record that demonstrates repeated offenses and flagrant disregard for traffic laws.
  • Compliant with the North Port Police Department tattoo policy:
    • Tattoo(s), brand(s) and/or body ornamentation of the neck, face, head, or hand (except for the ring finger in lieu of a wedding band) is strictly prohibited.
    • Members visible tattoo(s), brand(s) and/or body ornamentation will not depict, describe, or otherwise refer to sexual conduct, acts, organs, or preferences.
    • Members visible tattoo(s), brand(s) and/or body ornamentation will neither depict, describe, nor refer to intolerance of or discrimination against, any race, religion, gender or national origin, nor shall any member have any tattoo(s), brand(s), and/or body ornamentation commonly associated with organizations or groups, which advocate such intolerance or discrimination.
    • Tattoos, which are determined to be offensive, rests at the discretion of the Chief of Police, and would be visible to the public, must be covered.

Process of Employment with the North Port Police Department

Preemployment - CJBAT for sworn

Sworn Officer - Physical Abilities Test (PAT)

  • The physical abilities test will be given after an applicant has successfully passed the CJBAT.
  • The physical ability test will be job-related and uniformly applied.
  • The physical ability test was designed to simulate actual tasks and essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the job.
  • All applicants will sign a waiver agreement voluntarily consenting to engage in the physical abilities tests in addition to a completed Physician’s Clearance to Test form.
  • The North Port Police Department will use only the FDLE designed and approved physical ability courses. The current course used will measure the following job-related elements:
    • Running
    • Jumping and hurdles
    • Dragging a 150-pound sled or dummy
    • Flexibility, and
    • Finger strength

Civilian Positions – Typing/Computer Testing

  • For positions in Public Safety Telecommunications, a software program called CritiCall is utilized. For more information, view the CritiCall website.
  • For Records and other positions as assigned, a computer-based program is used testing skills in Microsoft Word, Data Entry, Numerical Filing, and Typing.

Oral Board Interview

  • Oral Boards Interview will consist of five (5) members of the North Port Police Department for sworn positions or minimum of three (3) for civilian positions.
  • During the oral board interview, questions asked of applicants are structured, consistent, and valid.
  • Questions utilized by Board members will be the same for all applicants relevant for the position applied for.
  • Questions shall not require only a “yes” or “no” answer; elaboration is necessary for adequate insight.
  • Those applicants who successfully pass the oral board interview will be invited to continue in the remaining components of the selection process.

Polygraph Examinations

  • All applicants will be administered a polygraph examination to determine applicant’s truthfulness.

    • Psychological examination (Police Officers, Telecommunications, Criminalistics, and Community Service Aide)

Psychological Examination (sworn and identified civilian positions)

  • The evaluation is designed to screen the applicants for emotional stability, maturity, and the ability to function under stressful conditions.

Medical Examination and Drug Screening

  • All applicants must pass a pre-employment medical examination by a licensed physician who will certify the general health of applicants.
  • Any applicant given a conditional offer of employment is required to undergo a urinalysis/blood test to detect illegal drug use.

Administrative Meeting

  • Meeting with the Chief and Command Staff

Failing any of the following steps in the selection process disqualifies applicant from reapplying for a period of one (1) year; polygraph examination, background investigation, psychological evaluation, Chief interview and medical examination / drug screening.

Scheduling

Patrol Officers and Public Safety Telecommunicators work 12 hours shifts. Shift bids are done by seniority per Union Contract.
